A Family Name Map of Medieval Ireland

The first detailed maps of Ireland were not drawn until 1600, by which time most of the place names had become Anglicized. In 1991, the historical cartographer, John Garnons Williams, using the Four Masters and many other sources, set out to map Ireland with the spellings of place names and family names as they were at 1300. The resulting map of Ireland, the product of nearly a thousand hours of research, is the first to show early Irish names in Irish. It is therefore of equal value to those delving into the history and genealogy of Ireland, to those researching their Irish family history and to the many people of Irish descent around the world, who are simply looking for an attractive map of their mother country.

Key Map and Information Booklet

Over 300 place-names are shown on the map and the locations of over 130 Irish sept or family names are identified. Many of the early spellings shown can be easily recognised by anyone familiar with the Irish language. The map is completely accessible to non-Irish speakers, however, as it comes free with a separate Key Map showing the equivalent modern place names and a information booklet giving the meaning of every place-name and family name, as well as a wealth of information on genealogy, family names and the history of Ireland. Indeed, many customers have commented that that the booklet itself provides one of the best short introductions to early Irish history and to the glory of the Irish language that is available anywhere.

The Book of Kells

Every one of the delightful illustrations, which enliven this map of Ireland and its spectacular border, and which catch the spirit of the medieval Ireland, is based the Book of Kells. This illuminated gospel, probably begun in the Irish Monastery of Iona in the Hebrides, was completed in the Monastery of Kells in Co Meath. It is now the greatest treasure on display in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Many customers buy the map of Ireland as much for its appeal as a work of art as for the information it contains.
