Legend has it that 5000 men and 4000 women of Parthalon's tribe were buried here in one week.

The earliest reference in Latin by Adamnan in his Life of St Columba means the same.

TIRCONNELL MODERN IRISH NAME: Tír Conaill MEANING: "tír `land' of Conail". They were the ancestors of the O'Donnells and the other families of Donegal. This was one of the ancient territories of Ireland covering modern County Donegal and in 1300 was outside Anglo-Norman control.

TYRONE, (County) EARLY NAME: Tir Eoghain MODERN IRISH NAME: Tír Eoghain MEANING: "tír `land' of Eoghan (Owen)". Eoghan, died c.456, was son of Niall of the Nine Hostages and ancestor of the O'Niells. Tir Eoghain, one of the ancient territories of Ireland extended north of the present county and in 1300 was outside Anglo-Norman control.
